I am so excited that after more than four decades of working in the world of mentoring, there is good news: mentoring benefits the mentor as much or more than the mentee.
In youth mentoring, the good mentor gives a young person someone to turn to, encouragement to try something new, and room to grow. Mentors report feeling younger, feeling less lonely, and improving their own health. In corporate mentoring, the mentor’s role as advocate and teacher enhances their own professional development.
Mentors and the people who run mentoring programs need guidance, too. Designing mentoring programs to meet individual needs is key. Recruiting the right mentors, training and supporting them as they prepare for their first meeting, and building a relationship over time are all components of effective mentoring. This means program leaders at nonprofits and businesses need practical tools and guidance to start, strengthen, or grow a mentoring program. This is where the Mentor Consulting Group comes in. Susan pioneered the nation's first school-based mentoring program in Norwalk, Connecticut, and founded Mentor Consulting Group to help others build on that work. Today she consults, trains and speaks to schools, community organizations, businesses and professional associations.
